Project Details
Project Description
You will help bring a new cross-platform action/adventure game to life, focusing on the feel of moment-to-moment play. The work spans prototyping mechanics, integrating art and audio, building AI behaviors, and shaping a content pipeline that supports fast iteration for a distributed team. The overarching purpose is to deliver a tightly tuned core loopβsnappy controls, clear feedback, and stable performanceβwhile enabling designers to author content efficiently.
Core Responsibilities and Expected Deliverables
You will translate design specs into responsive systems such as player abilities, enemy behavior, camera and targeting, traversal, and moment-to-moment UI flows. Day to day, you will implement and tune animation state machines, physics interactions, and game state management; integrate VFX and audio cues to reinforce feedback; and maintain clean interfaces between gameplay code and tools used by designers and artists. Each sprint you are expected to deliver shippable increments backed by profiling notes, playtest observations, and concise technical documentation so that level designers and QA can validate quickly. You will contribute to stability by writing unit and integration tests where practical, triaging bugs with production, and keeping build scripts healthy for continuous integration and nightly playtests.
Required Experience and Preferred Qualifications
Candidates should demonstrate strong programming fundamentals, vector math, and understanding of real-time performance constraints. A playable portfolio or video capture showing prototypes or shipped features is highly valued. Preferred qualifications include experience with state machines and behavior trees, online gameplay concepts, platform SDK integration for consoles or mobile, accessibility considerations, and familiarity with balancing tools and content authoring workflows. Industry certifications are welcome but not required.
Tools or Platforms to Be Used
The project uses Unity 2022/2023 LTS with C#, URP/HDRP depending on feature area, Addressables for content management, Timeline and Cinemachine for cutscenes and cameras, and Shader Graph for lightweight effects. Source control is Git or Perforce depending on asset needs. Observability relies on the Unity Profiler, Frame Debugger, and RenderDoc, with crash reporting via Backtrace or Sentry. Build and deployment automation runs through GitHub Actions with artifact management and automated smoke tests. Target platforms include PC and current-generation consoles, with selective mobile prototypes as needed.
Language Requirement
English is required for daily collaboration; additional languages are appreciated but not required.
Communication Style
The studio works asynchronously via Slack and Git, with weekly Zoom playtests and design reviews. Specs, tuning guides, and post-mortems are maintained in Notion, and designers share annotated Figma boards for UI flows and economy charts. Decisions are captured in short design memos for traceability.
Time Commitment or Working Window
Approximately 40 hours per week with flexible scheduling; core collaboration windows target late morning to late afternoon UTC. Public demo or patch weeks may include brief, pre-planned overlaps outside core hours with comp time.
Payment Terms
Monthly salary with annual performance review and bonus eligibility. For contractor engagements, milestone-based deliverables with biweekly invoicing and net-15 payment terms.
Evaluation Criteria
Assessment centers on the feel and clarity of a short prototype exercise, code quality and profiling notes, collaboration in a live pairing session with a designer, communication in a playtest debrief, and references confirming reliability and iteration speed.
Other Requirements
A standard NDA is required upon offer acceptance along with identity verification and reference checks consistent with local laws. Lightweight time tracking is used for contractors. Security and compliance training is provided during onboarding for platform SDKs and data handling.
